The correct answer is: Hope the narrator is impressing the shop girl.

The narrator is in a situation where he finds himself compelled to talk to the shop girl - probably pushed by his friends to do so. When he describes himself with adjectives such as <em>vexed, confused </em>and <em>happy</em>, the contrast of the latter with the first two shows he is attempting to make an impression - to make believe feeling something he is really not.

When it is pointed out the other boys are "absorbing interest in the proceedings", it is implied they are looking forward to see how the conversation between the narrator and the shop girl will turn out.

Write down the noun clause used in the following sentence from the passage and explain its grammatical function in the sentence:
Svetradugi [14.3K]

When it comes to the noun clause and its function in the sentence provided, we can answer the question in the following manner:

  • The noun clause is "that whoever spots the gold first."
  • Its grammatical function in the sentence is direct object.

<h3>Noun clauses</h3>

A noun clause is a subordinate/dependent clause, usually set off by a relative pronoun - that, which, who etc. A noun clause, as its name tips off, functions as a noun would, and it can act as the subject of a sentence or as the object of a verb or a preposition.

In the sentence we are analyzing here, the noun clause is "that whoever spots the gold first." It functions as the direct object of the verb "agreed," completing its meaning.

Answer:

Enjambed line.

Explanation:

In poetry, an enjambment is a literary device in which there is a disproportion between the syntax and the metric of a verse.

It can easily be recognized as the idea is not fully expressed by the end of a verse. An enjambment breaks the thought in two and it must be continued through the following line.

This literary device was frowned upon by the classics but was kindly welcomed by the romantics due to its strong <em>expressiveness</em>.
