The displacement of 1.75 million African-Americans from the southern states to those of the midwest, northwest and west of that country was called The Great Migration. It took place from 1915 to 1930. The estimate of the number of displaced persons varies according to the time frame used. Black migrants sought to escape racism and seek work in the thriving industrial cities.

The migration of African-Americans had as an indirect consequence an improvement in their integration into society. Living and working closer to Americans of European origin made the difference between the two human groups gradually erased. This period was for many African-Americans the transition from a rural lifestyle linked to farms to another urban as industrial workers.
