''The British Empire was a force for good in India.” How far do you agree with this statement?
Murljashka [212]

Answer:

uh, nowhere. They were HORRIBLE

Why not, you may ask?

- The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre

- By 1890 about 6,000 British officials ruled 250 million Indians

- Racism was also reflected in the penal code. There had never been a taboo against homosexuality in Indian culture and practice until the British Victorians introduced one.

- Britain also helped solidify and perpetuate the iniquities of the caste system, which was a horrible division of people.

- Religion became a useful means of divide and rule, with the fostering of a two-nation theory that eventually divided the country and made partition inevitable; one million were killed and 17 million displaced.

- Winston Churchill, widely heralded as one of the greatest brits was viciously racist and perpetuated hardline racism in British colonies around the world, once saying: “I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion . . . Let the Viceroy sit on the back of a giant elephant and trample Gandhi into the dirt.”

- Up to 35 million died unnecessarily in famines; London ate India’s bread while India starved, and in 1943 nearly four million Bengalis died. It was their own fault, according to Churchill, for “breeding like rabbits”.

and that's barely skimming the surface. The sheer number of atrocities Britain has committed in India established its legacy as being one of genocide, tyranny, cultural theft and erasure. The few positive things its presence accomplished are far outweighed by the sick acts it carried out on the Indian people.

What was the relationship between the ottoman empire’s power and the rise of the European exploration
sashaice [31]

Because it was a Muslim Empire bet on Conquest of all non-Muslim lands (especially Christian Europe), it was hostile to trade and/or exploration by Christian Kingdoms and/or principalities. Before the Ottomans, Europe used the Silk Road and the Spice Trade Routes that went through the lands that were later conquered by the Ottomans (Asia Minor) who then blocked all trade and exploration ventures into Asia and/or the Middle East.

This forced European powers to seek alternate routes for commerce and exploration in Asia. The Portuguese were the first, they circumnavigated and explored the African coastline all the way to the southernmost part of Africa and finally made it to India. This allowed them to renew and control the lucrative Spice Trade and further map the unknown world. Spain was engaged in a hegemonic strife with Portugal and thanks to Christopher Columbus, who was seeking an alternate; shorter route to India sailed through the Atlantic and discovered the New World.

Compare and Contrast How do sales taxes differ from income taxes?
erma4kov [3.2K]

The Differences Between Income Tax and Sales Tax.

Sales tax is a pass-through tax levied on a transaction, whereas income tax is a direct tax paid by individuals on their income.

Individuals are subject to both federal and state income taxes, unless they are fortunate enough to reside in a state that is tax-free. Consumers who live in states with a sales tax must pay it to retailers at the point of sale. Sales tax is exclusively managed at the state level. In return, businesses provide the state the sales tax they have collected.

In general, income-earners must deal with income tax; only those who sell specified goods or services must deal with the collection and remittance of sales tax to the state.
