These lines would best fit an old, philosophical doctor based on his language use. A farmer and uneducated trader and a vagrant wouldn't be able to speak in such a manner probably.

The underlying meaning of this poem is that people tend to regret decisions and choices, no matter how small. Frost shows that by writing "yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back." This could be interpreted by the reader as Frost unsure, and doubtful of his decision, still to be made, even though he feels it has already been chosen. He regrets that he choses the path that is easy, and fails to realize the easy path is not always the right path. (sorry if this doesn't help) :)
