It is ironic that after his death, the Geats build a tower to memorialize Beowulf because most of the Geats deserted him in battle. 
He was fighting a dragon, when the Geats just ran away and left him there to die. The only man who stayed with Beowulf and actually defeated the monster was Wiglaf.
