The word Yellow Journalism came from a comic which was very popular, named Hogan's Alley. A character dressed in yellow was featured as "the yellow kid" in this comic. William Randolph, owner of the New York journal desired to compete with Pulitzer in each and every way possible, and hence he started copying each and every style, write ups, work and also hired the artist. Both were rivals, and Pulitzer, as an answer to William hired new cartoonist and created a second yellow kid. Soon, both started competing against each other, and that style was known as yellow journalism.
In the past it was so people can talk against the US if they don't like it and not be charged or punished. In today's world it is mostly the same but it is more used for the freedom of pres so the news can say what ever they want
