The Embargo Act of 1807 was a law that prohibited the Americans to trade with the European nations France and England it was passed by President Thomas Jefferson who hoped to punish these two nations who were interfering the American trade while they were in the war in Europe.

The effect of the embargo act of 1807 was seen in the shipping industries and markets. Imports and exports were declining, smuggling was done in secret which somewhat provided money to the people. The prices fell in the agricultural sector.
