Answer:

prohibit slavery

Explanation:

In the Dred Scott decision, the United States Supreme Court decided that Congress did not have the power to prohibit slavery

The Supreme Court made this ruling on March 6, 1857, against a slave Dred Scott who was seeking his freedom. However, the Supreme Court did not see it that way and declared that slaves were not citizens and so were not entitled to the rights that a citizen could enjoy.

The court also ruled that the Missouri Compromise was not constitutional which caused civil unrest in the North and was a major contributor to the Civil War.

Nick comes from an upper middle-class background (you had to have money to go to Yale, you still do!) Still , Nick's family did not have a fraction of the money that Gatsby or Tom had.
