You need a common denominator in order to add them. 3 and 4 both go into 12.

3/4= (3*3)/12= 9/12

4/3= (4*3)/12= 12/12= 1

=3/4 + 4/3
=9/12 + 12/12
=9/12 + 1
= 1 9/12

simplify by dividing top & bottom by 3
= 1 3/4
