Some things in the social part would be the second great awakening and different movements, like women's suffrage, black rights, and temperance. Military would be the Civil War, science/technology would be cars.  
The way life might improve would be new technology/technology advancement, and the women's right to vote becomes an amendment.
Some things that could get lost in time would be being great full for simple things. How she should view change: It can be a good thing, but it can also be bad. It just depends on how you view it. In this time period I would view it to be good.
