Rivera was a controversial figure while he was alive, and one of the reasons for this was the fact that he was openly atheist and communist. This was often expressed in his paintings. The most extreme example was his mural <em>Dreams of a Sunday in the Alameda</em>, in which Rivera painted writer Ignacio Ramírez holding a sign that read  "God does not exist". The painting was banned until Rivera agreed to remove the inscription.
