<span>Many whites were scared away from supporting the civil rights movement because of the media. The media coverage showed America the cruel and often violent treatment that was inflicted on the colored people. The whites were afraid of supporting the movement for fear of being beaten, arrested or ostracized by the white community that was against the movement.</span>
