Multiply both sides by 3.

4x + 4 = 36

Subtract 4 from both sides.

4x = 32

Divide both sides by 4.

x = 8

Multiply both sides by 3, subtract 4 from both sides, and then divide both sides by 4. <em>(or you could cross multiply)</em>

$\frac{3(4x + 4)}{3} = 3(12)$

4x + 4 = 36
