Barry's first reaction was hearing them when he was at a radio station. After this he was persuaded to play their music because they were creating a large following with crowds and advertisements. Television was a large part because they were played on the Ed Sullivan show, which was very popular. Barry originally turned down the offer to MC because he wasn't going to be paid to do the show. The Beatles carried controversy because people acted crazy at their shows and they had long hair, which was not normal. Nick was really surprised by the success and the influx of calls and money. When the Beatles first took the stage they couldn't be heard because of all of the yelling and cameras going off. They were so successful because they were British and popular in the USA, which was not the norm.
