y= 2^2 − 5x is linear.  2^2 is just a constant.  The x in 5x has the power 1.

y = x/3 is linear.  Think of it as y = (1/3)x.  Again, we have the 1st power of x.

y = x^3 + 1/3 is nonlinear.  It's a cubic.  Note the 3rd power of x.

y=x/3 is linear

y=x^3+1/3 is non linear
