west Germany was under control of America and England after the war and east Germany was under control of Russia. Many people in east Germany disagreed with communist Russia's system and they left to go to West Germany. Russia put up a wall, later named the Berlin Wall, to prevent this. it was heavily guarded and many people died attempting to escape.
