It is believed that the Mayans of Central America were the first to discover cocoa even before 900 A.D. They discovered that they could harvest the beans in the cocoa pods, crush them, add water and chili peppers and transform them into a treasured liquid which they called "food of the gods". They held the cocoa in such high esteem that it was drank during religious ceremonies and weddings. Pictures of cocoa pods were painted on temple walls and artifacts collected showed images of kings and Mayan gods drinking chocolate.

Answer:

The cacao tree was part of the ancient civilizations like the Olmec, Maya, and Aztec. These trees grew in the part of the Central and South of America, which gave the civilizations to get acquainted with it. Mayans worshiped the cacao tree and calling cacao pods as the food of the gods. Chocolate drinks were used in religious ceremonies and consumed by Mayan people. In Aztec culture, they not only drink chocolate but valued cacao beans more than gold.
