Los derrames de petróleo constituyen un compuesto sumamente contaminante debido a que su retiro, del ambiente en el cual se vierte, es muy difícil, permitiendo que en el proceso se contamine el recurso en el cual es vertido, regularmente el recurso hídrico y la fauna que se haya en ese medio. Actualmente se ha innovado sobre algunas tecnologías para su retiro como microorganismos que rompen sus cadenas o algunos materiales absorbentes que pueden atrapar el petróleo y retirarlo de un medio, sin embargo ¿realmente son suficientes éstos sistemas para detener una contaminación progresiva por causa de un derrame?, es evidente que no, puesto que la recuperación necesaria sobre el ecosistema posterior al retiro del petróleo toma mucho tiempo.
