Well, both One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and Gulag Archipelago did capture the harsh treatment in the Soviet prison camps.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn a Nobel prize winner was himself a gulag prisoner from 1945 to 1953, so his story was widely considered as an accurate depiction of everyday prison life in the gulags. Solzhenitsyn gave terrifying accounts of the working conditions for prisoners, such as working in an outdoor construction site in the deep winter without proper equipment or clothing. The book covered one of the cruelest and blackest moments of human history, it showed how wicked man could be to mankind, prisoners were made to work without food, and some were killed at any slight mistake. What makes it so pathetic was the murder of tens of millions of innocent Soviet citizens by their own Government, and it happened mostly during the rule of Stalin, from 1929 to 1953.

A strategy President Truman and his advisers considered to end World War II was
mario62 [17]

It was the use of the Atomic Bomb.  Having won the war in Europe, the Americans and their allies concentrated their efforts on the Far East.  Japan refused to surrender despite the on-going bombings and destruction of her army.  They also threatened to kill American POWs if they U.S. invaded Japan. Truman ordered the use of the atomic bomb.  It was used in Hiroshima on August 6 then again on Nagasaki on August 9 resulting to Japan’s surrender.

Compare the ways that European nations, other than Russia, moved away from communist rule.
Harlamova29_29 [7]

Answer:

The main difference between the way in which Russia abandoned communism and the way in which the other countries of the Warsaw Pact did so was that Russia was part of the Soviet Union, which dissolved for political reasons without social revolutions; while the rest of the nations did so through popular revolutions known as the Revolutions of 1989.

Explanation:

The revolutions in Eastern Europe in 1989 were a series of events in which many of the Communist Party regimes that ruled several Eastern European countries since the mid-late 1940s were forced to give up power, following a series of popular protests.

The fall of the communist regimes was associated with perestroika in the USSR and began with the Polish People’s Republic, followed by massive protests that led to a change of power in East Germany, Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria, as well as reforms initiated by the communist authorities in Hungary. The change of power was non-violent, except in Romania.
