Words have two types of meanings, denotative (stated in the dictionary) and connotative (given in context).
CONNOTATION may vary depending on context and also on culture. For example, the word childish has a negative connotation since it refers to a person with immature behaviour. The word cat in some cultures (e.g. in Argentina) refer to the feline and also to prostitution.
