Creative writing is that which focuses on narrative craft and character development. This is usually the type of writing found in poetry and novels. Creative writing, therefore, focuses on the "creativity" required to imagine a story, characters and settings. This is the least important type of writing for students who are learning a second language. These students need to focus more on the language that is being used than on the creative content of their texts.
