This official letter written by Commissioner Lin Zexu during the Qing dynasty  to Queen Victoria of Britain was against the sale of opium in China. Between the 18th and 19th century, Lin Zexu was one of if not the principal voice against the sale the hallucinating, addictive and evil effect of opium in China´s society. He voiced against this commercial activity and as such made known in his letter that if continued  such activities would be met with strong and prohibitive actions against the traders.

Confucianism is a  philosophical social and ethical way of life spread by Confucius between 5 and 6th century BC.  The letter to Queen Victoria was very specific in its contents. It was about prohibiting the growing opium importation  and not about conversion of visitors into Chinese philosophical way of life.
