The statement which summarizes the publication’s view of government is, “We need government because people are flawed”.

Further Explanation:

A “small government” doesn’t mean that the administration is weak. It means that the administration should frame a narrow set of concerns and responsibilities; that is protecting the country from “foreign threats”, ensuring easy and smooth trade, and most importantly, ensuring that protecting Americans' constitutional rights of the citizens.

Increasing the role of administration beyond the responsibilities is what “conservatives” see it as a threat, as a ‘central government’  that need not concern itself with the localities that it represents, tends to accumulate more ‘power’ to itself.

Ever since the “Articles of Confederation” were disclaimed, States were not meant to be completely “autonomous bodies”. The Civil War proved that quite conclusively. But they weren’t meant to be regional agencies completely dependent on ‘Federal funding’, either.

"<em>We need government so we have a means to control our leaders."  </em>isn't correct. He doesn't even mention leaders.

"We don’t need government because people are well behaved."  and "We don’t need government because it has too many checks and balances." are wrong for the same reason that the next sentence to be presented here is right.

He says:  <em>"If men were angels, no government would be necessary"</em>. But men are not angels, men are men. That's how he justifies his view on the subject:

We need government because people are flawed.

What were some of the key elements of Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points?
Anna11 [10]

Correct answer:  An association of nations and open diplomacy.

Explanation:

The 14 Points were set forth by US President Woodrow Wilson in a speech he delivered to Congress in January, 1918.  The 14 Points were his proposals for how to end the Great War (World War I) and establish international peace.

Quickly summarized, these were Wilson's 14 points:

  1. Agreements between countries must be open, not secret.
  2. Freedom of navigation on the seas by all nations at all times.
  3. Free trade between countries accepting the peace, removing economic barriers between them.
  4. All nations reduce their weapons and armies "to the lowest point consistent with domestic safety."
  5. Adjustment of colonial claims in a fair and impartial way.
  6. All German troops will leave Russian territory.
  7. All foreign troops leave Belgium, and Belgian independence and sovereignty be restored.
  8. French territory should be restored, including the disputed region of Alsace-Lorraine.
  9. Readjustment of the borders of Italy "along clearly recognizable lines of nationality."
  10. Austria-Hungary retain a place among the nations, but the peoples of Austria-Hungary should be granted the accorded for independence if they so choose.
  11. The Central Powers' troops will leave the Balkans, and the Balkan states  should enjoy political and economic independence.
  12. Turkey shall remain as its own country, but other nationalities under the Ottoman Empire "should be assured an undoubted security of life" and "opportunity of autonomous development."
  13. Poland is to be an independent country.
  14. "A general association of nations must be formed under specific covenants for the purpose of affording mutual guarantees of political independence and territorial integrity to great and small states alike." - I quoted the 14th point in full, as this idea from Woodrow Wilson led to the formation of the League of Nations.

What is one reason that scientists decided to change the time on the doomsday clock?.
kvasek [131]

<u>Reason for change in doomsday clock :</u>

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the hands of its symbolic Doomsday Clock closer to midnight, indicating that the likeliness of a human-caused apocalypse has increased since last year.

The Bulletin adjusted the clock to reflect looming threats from nuclear weapons and accelerated global warming.

The clock is now set at 100 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been to symbolic doom and the first time the hands have been within the two-minute mark.

"We are now expressing how close the world is to catastrophe in seconds — not hours, or even minutes," Rachel Bronson, the Bulletin's president and CEO, said in a statement. "We now face a true emergency — an absolutely unacceptable state of world affairs that has eliminated any margin for error or further delay."

<u>About Doomsday clock :</u>

The Doomsday Clock is a symbol that represents the likelihood of a man-made global catastrophe, in the opinion of the members of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Maintained since 1947, the clock is a metaphor for threats to humanity from unchecked scientific and technological advances. A hypothetical global catastrophe is represented by midnight on the clock, with the Bulletin's opinion on how close the world is to one represented by a certain number of minutes or seconds to midnight, assessed in January of each year. The main factors influencing the clock are nuclear risk and climate change. The Bulletin's Science and Security Board monitors new developments in the life sciences and technology that could inflict irrevocable harm to humanity.

The clock's original setting in 1947 was seven minutes to midnight. It has since been set backward eight times and forward 16 times for a total of 24, the farthest from midnight being 17 minutes in 1991, and the nearest being 100 seconds, from 2020 to the present.
