“O Pioneers!” by “Willa Cather” describes the relationship between land and man. It is a story about ‘Bergson’ family who were Swedish immigrants, settled on the “Nebraskan Great Plains”.
In the beginning of the story, author describes the setting of a land that will always remain wild. People might go in search of lands where they could settle but there the land will always remain wind-blown and covered with grass that no one could settle there. Here, land is symbolizing mankind. As sometimes, humans become rugged, hard to change, in the same way, land also remains the same and never changes.
The other setting which the author describes is the time. Time in which people come and want to settle in the lands. At any point of time, nature is more powerful than the man and doesn’t respond to the ones who are trying to conquer it.
