What were two of the reasons for the Great Schism?
Hunter-Best [27]

The Schism of 1054 (also the Great Schism or the East-West Schism) describes the separation of the Eastern Christian churches and the Western Church, through mutual excommunications by the Pope Leo IX and the Patriarch of Constantinople, Michael Cerularius.

Some of the reasons for this separation were:

  • Eastern theology had its roots in Greek philosophy, while most of western theology was based on Roman law. This led to differences in understanding the role of the Holy Spirit.
  • Eastern churches disliked the enforcement of celibacy and the use of unleavened bread in the Eucharist.
  • The Roman churches added "<em>and from the son</em>" to the Nicene Creed without consulting the Eastern churches.

Although Columbus was technically born in Italy, he sailed to the New World officially under Spanish control, which is why the Spanish had a "head start" on New World colonization.
