To what extent were the methods of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B DuBois appropriate for the time in which they lived?

History

Georgia [21]3 years ago

Booker T. Washington believed that the way to solve racial terrorism and racial-segregation was through education. He believed that African Americans should educate themselves to trade and invest in their own businesses, so they could prove others their hard work would impact in the US economy.

W.E.B Dubois also believed in self-improvement through education but he believed that they should get rid of segregation. He did not agree with Washington’s acceptance of racial segregation because he thought it encouraged whites to deny African Americans rights. He advocated for a civil rights agenda and he argued that social change would come with the development of a group of college-educated blacks that were called “The Talented Tenth”

Washington method advocated to show white people the value of African Americans, but if a person is a racist, there is no way you can show this person the value of a person they do not accept. Dubois method pushed for agitation and protests as a way to push the civil rights movement, he also defended education.

Washington and Dubois idea of education is valid but there is no way to compromise with racists showing them “your value”. You have to fight for your rights, this is why Dubois philosophy endured.

Sphinxa [80]

The European & African-American were the American pioneers who settled the northern Great Plains.

Why did people settle in the Great Plains?

Geographically, the great Plains is termed as the expanse of flatland in North America that is located west on the Mississippi River and east of the Rocky Mountains in which much of it are covered in prairie, steppe, and grassland.

Mostly, the european immigrants flooded the location while seeking for political or religious freedom as well as to escape poverty in their own country. Also, the younger people migrated there because the land was becoming more expensive and want a chance to own their own land.

Answer:

Transcendentalism is an American literary, political, and philosophical movement of the early nineteenth century, centered around Ralph Waldo Emerson. Other important transcendentalists were Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Amos Bronson Alcott, Frederic Henry Hedge, and Theodore Parker. Stimulated by English and German Romanticism, the Biblical criticism of Herder and Schleiermacher, and the skepticism of Hume, the transcendentalists operated with the sense that a new era was at hand. They were critics of their contemporary society for its unthinking conformity, and urged that each person find, in Emerson's words, “an original relation to the universe” (O, 3). Emerson and Thoreau sought this relation in solitude amidst nature, and in their writing. By the 1840s they, along with other transcendentalists, were engaged in the social experiments of Brook Farm, Fruitlands, and Walden; and, by the 1850s in an increasingly urgent critique of American slavery.
