Aztec people believed that sacrificing human beings repaid their debts and appease the gods. People also offered maguey thorns after tainting them with blood from their own body parts as self-sacrifice. There were people chosen for sacrifice purposes and the rituals were performed at a particular time.  

Another notable sacrifice was through the Flower Wars; a battle fought to appease the gods due to the number of dead victims. The battle resulted after famines and droughts and the sacrifice was meant to honor the gods.
