The Punic Wars began after Rome started expanding their territory after conquering Italy and Sicily. They then turned their attention to Carthage (which would now be parts of modern-day North Africa, the southern Iberian peninsula and the western Mediterranean). The Punic Wars happened because Rome was interested in Carthage, because it was the dominant power at the time.
