In fact, most societies in the past operated under a strict hierarchy where some people were more important than others. However, Chiristianity differs from this view, and the Christian idea of equality was influential in the creation of the Declaration of Independence.

The stalemate in Korea left us in a position of limbo. We couldn't advance, as it would further aggravate the high tensions between the us and the Chinese (and the USSR). We also couldn't leave as this would make South Korea vulnerable and they would be easily conquered. We had to stay if only to help keep a watchful eye and the peace.
