This is a good example of the use of "Pendentives".
Pendentive is a constructive method used to connect a square room and a curved dome by setting a circular dome over a square frame. This method creates a huge interior open space underneath the dome. 
They were very commonly used in Orthodox, Baroque and Renaissance churches.

This type of structure makes the building able to hold large sized ornaments on the ceilings and providing a lot of room for people at the same time, which is really ideal if its used as museum or Churches
