The middle colonies were New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. Families in the Middle colonies had farms and worked very hard to produce crops to feed themselves and to trade with other colonies. These territories were known for their fertile land and produced many crops to the degree that the Middle colonies were known as the "Bread Basket" colonies. They produced hemp, wheat, rye, and corn. So the transportation of products was key to the success of their economy.
