Answer:

The Shanghai Communiqué of 1972 was signed on February 28, 1972, during President Richard Nixon´s trip to China. It is one of the three pillars of the US-China relationship, the first of three joint communiqués. It´s was the first bilateral document signed by the United States with China after 1949.

Regarding the tricky issue of Taiwan, each side stated its position.

The US stated that it acknowledges that the Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Strait accept there is one China and Taiwan is part of China. The US does not challenge that. It also hopes there will be a peaceful settlement of the issue by the Chinese on both sides.

On its side, China stated that Taiwan is part of China, that it was returned to the motherland, and it is a province of China, it´s an internal affair where foreign intervention is unacceptable. The People´s Republic of China is the only legitimate representative of China, the Chinese government stated in the document.
