pshichka [43]

Answer:

The statement is true.

Explanation:

According to the definition by World Health Organization (WHO), a risk factor is any characteristic or exposure of an individual that increases the likelihood of developing a disease or an injury. Some examples of risk factors are tobacco and alcohol, poor sanitation and hygiene, malnutrition, unprotected sex, high blood pressure, prolonged exposure to sunlight etc. Risk factors act individually but with time they coexist and interact with each other.

Further explanation:

The risk factors are categorized into five groups

- Meal patterns

2. Physiological risk factors – these factors are related to individual’s physiological factors and they may occur in combination with genetic and behavioral factors. Some examples are,

- Obesity

- High cholesterol levels

3. Demographic risk factors – these factors are common for overall population. These may vary according to the age, gender, occupation, religion, wage

4. Environmental risk factors – environment includes social, cultural, political, biological and economic factors. Some examples are,

- Poor sanitation and hygiene

- Environmental pollution

- Risks at career place

- Social and cultural rituals

5. Genetic risk factors – these factors occur due to individual’s genes. Some diseases and characteristics are inherited from individual’s parents. For example, Thalassemia, sickle cell anaemia. Some diseases may occur due to the mutation of individual’s genes. For examples, color blindness, Tay-sachs disease and phenylketonuria.
