Gulliver's travels: how did the giant creature lift gulliver?

The giant creature lifted Gulliver with his thumb and his middle finger.
Gulliver was previously lying on the ground when the giant appeared and wanted to step on Gulliver, not seeing his tiny body there in the grass. He yelled at him not to stomp him, which the giant heard, picked Gulliver up with his two fingers and placed him inside his pocket.
