<span>After the Mexican-American War, the area that later became the state of California was ceded to the US. With the discovery of gold and the rush of people who traveled out to this area in hopes of finding part of the precious metals, there were enough people for the area to apply for statehood. This took place and was ratified in 1850.</span>
