Because of the tropical climate much of Indonesia's population live near water. Sumatra's largest river drains from the West coast to the east coast into the Strait of Malacca. In the north, the Asahan River once linked trade between the Batak people and the Malay people. The Asahan River is now dammed however. It produces services along the main river.
