One day, a boy was sitting by the edge of a lake, reading the newspaper. He was fascinated by the story he was reading, which explained how a man had caught a fish, and inside the fish was the biggest pearl in the world. The man was now rich, and the whole town was celebrating.

The child kept reading the story, and he wondered where all these mysterious towns were. Nothing ever happened in his town, and news there were always boring and predictable. As he was thinking of this, he fell asleep. He dreamt that he was an explorer, and he travelled to far away lands to discover treasures. He also dreamt that he found a fountain in a garden, and that the fountain was hiding a secret. When he woke up, it was dark, and he went home.

The next morning, the boy could not stop thinking about his dream. Therefore, he went to the library and borrowed a map of the city. He went back to the lake to look at the map, and he marked every square that had a fountain in it. He was determined to find the treasure. Once the map had been throughly examined, the boy began to look at every fountain in town, hoping to find the one he had seen in his dream. However, the morning passed and he was finding nothing.

However, as he began to enter his last square, he saw it. The fountain was there, and he rushed to the edge. As he looked down, he was able to see not one, but a whole string of pearls. He could not believe his luck! He put his hand in and retrieved the peals. However, just at that moment, a girl came running towards him. She could not stop crying and thanking him for retrieving her pearls. Although he was sad to see he could not keep the treasure, he was happy to give them back. The girl was so thankful that she asked him to have an ice cream with her. He accepted. Little did he know that the real treasure he found that day was a friend for life.

Why is Bob Wilson "startled" that Oppenheimer calls the Japanese ‘those poor little people'? Use evidence from the text to suppo
stiv31 [10]

Answer:

Bob Wilson was startled when Oppenheimer called the Japanese <em>"those poor little people" </em>because he understood the painful sense of both sides.

Explanation:

In an interview with Frank Stasio, Mr. Bird reveals the incident when Oppenheimer talks about Japanese and calls them "those poor little people." Bob Wilson was startled by this statement of Oppenheimer because he was able to understand the painful sense of both sides. It was the time when Oppenheimer was instructing people where to bomb.

Textual evidence:

<em>"And she asks, `Who are you talking about?' and he says, `The people who the bomb is going to be used on, the people in Japan.' And this is the very week where he's also instructing the bombardiers exactly how to drop the bomb, at what height to achieve the most maximum destruction. So he understood, you know, in a painful sense, both sides, the necessity as he saw it at the time, and yet, the horrible human consequences of it."</em>

William Blake's lyric poem, "The Tyger," is a meditation on the source and intent of creation. His words create striking images used to question religion and contrast good and evil. The imagery of fire evokes the fierceness and potential danger of the tiger, which itself represents what is evil or dreaded. "Tyger Tyger, burning bright / In the forests of the night," Blake begins, conjuring the image of a tiger's eyes burning in the darkness. "In what distant deeps or skies. / Burnt the fire of thine eyes?" he continues, before asking, "What the hand, dare seize the fire? ... In what furnace was thy brain?"
