There were many high quality Gothic novels during the romantic age, but the most famous one is Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. This novel inspired many more gothic novels to come, some more famous being the victorian novel Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Armstrong (1999:11) concurs that 'myths were not intended to be taken literally, but were metaphorical attempts to describe a reality that was too complex and elusive to express in any other way'.
