2 * 4 = 8
8 - 2 = 6
6 cups of flour

1/2 * 12 = 6
6 * 3 = 18
18 - 6 = 12
12 eggs or 1 dozen eggs

Mom needs to buy 6 cups of flour and a dozen eggs at the store before she bakes the cakes.
