Abusive relationships are not synonymous with physical violence. Often the signs that indicate a relationship is no longer healthy are very subtle because many of these relationships start out happy and healthy. An abusive relationship can gradually cease to be happy with jealousy, trying to control where one goes or how one dresses, belittling the person, their achievements or dreams, etc.
In an abusive relationship, those who practice these acts may imply that they do so because they care too much about their partner, that this is their way of showing affection or that every relationship is like that. This is not true and you need to be aware of what is happening. In addition to jealousy and humiliation, another subtle form of abuse can be gaslighting, a type of emotional manipulation in which the abuser disqualifies the person and makes them question situations in which they knew they were right.
