I would say that applied art has both visual appeal and functional uses. Examples could be the carved bone spoons ie spoons whose handles are decorated by carvings, canoe paddles with carvings on the handle and canoes with carvings on the prow, of various First Nations artists on the British Columbia Pacific Coast of Canada.
