Read the poem and respond to the following:

Answer: POVERTY

Gwendolyn Brooks delves into the conditions of real people's lives, exposing the tiny details that demonstrate that their everyday routine is strained by the lack of money. Without any resources, though, the couple in "The Bean Eaters" manages to collect a room full of memories – scraps and "fringes" of all of the things which remind them of days when their lives were happier (and maybe just a little bit more well-off).

                                            OLD AGE

Popular opinion says that once you reach a certain age, your life might as well be over. After all, what do old people have to contribute to society? They don't work. They don't produce children anymore. What do they do? That's precisely the sort of logic that allows society to forget an elderly couple, leaving them all on their own in a tiny rented room. Even though they may once have been mothers and fathers, friends and family, they're now abandoned. It's not too pretty, we have to say.

                                       The Home

Sure, a rented room in the back of a house isn't exactly what comes to mind when we think of homes in America. After all, isn't owning your own home part of the American Dream? From what we can tell, this bean-eating couple missed out on that particular part of the dream a long time ago. Despite the fact that they have little money and are left on their own, though, this couple has constructed a routine that seems to fill their lives – even though the entire scope of their lives is contained within one tiny room.

                                      Race

We must say, it's a little presumptuous for us to decide that race is one of the central topics of "The Bean Eaters." After all, the couples' skin color is only mentioned once – and even then, it's part of a larger description. Gwendolyn Brooks's work, however, is known for its deft exposure of the ways that a person's race or class can affect his or her social standing. When she was writing in the 1960s, poverty rates among blacks were ridiculously higher than the poverty rate among whites. So even if this poem isn't explicitly about race, it's completely shadowed by America's racial history.

Write a well developed paragraph discussing
Alexus [3.1K]

The citizens of Sighet resisted the truth about Germany's intent to exterminate Jews because Jewish people have lived in many countries and, although they have long been persecuted, nothing like mass extermination has ever occurred. They also believe that they need not fear Nazi Germany because it will be defeated in the war.

Until the state of Israel was founded, the Jewish people had no country of their own. Their history is patterned with persecution, often by those of the country in which they have lived. In fact, this persecution goes all the way back to the Crusades. Throughout European history, they have been expelled from various countries, or they have had restrictions placed upon them, such as having to live in ghettos, as were established in Venice. But, no such mass extermination ever occurred like that of Nazi Germany. This is why it is hard for the residents of Sighet to believe Moishe's warnings.

Furthermore, Elie's town of Sighet was a part of Hungary in the 1940s. At that time the Jews were integrated into Hungarian society. In the capital of Budapest, they were 23% of the population and were prominent in the arts, business, and science. Perhaps, this is why the one resident of Sighet calmly observes after the removal of the foreign Jews, "What do you expect? That's war . . . " and the others go back to their daily lives thinking that Hungarian Jews need not be afraid.

Not long after the foreign Jews were removed from Sighet, Moishe the Beadle, who was among them, returns and states that the deportation train on which he and others rode, was turned over to the German Gestapo once it reached into Polish territory. It was then that the mass murders of the Jews took place at the hands of the Gestapo. Moishe escaped death because as he was made to stand before the immense open grave, the shot to his head missed and went into his leg. When it was dark, he escaped and returned to Sighet to warn them. As they listen, the Jewish people in Sighet find it hard to believe that Hungary would turn over the train to the Gestapo. They also are convinced that Russia will defeat Germany.

The people were saying, "The Red Army is advancing with giant strides . . . Hitler will not be able to harm us, even if he wants to . . . "

Which phrase or sentence in this excerpt from Kurt Vonnegut's "Report on the Barnhouse Effect" demonstrates the use of irony?
ycow [4]
General Barker bustled about the house like a woman preparing Thanksgiving dinner for twenty.

This is the best example of irony. The excerpt describes General Barker, who occupies a traditionally very masculine profession, preparing for the demonstration of the most destructive weapon in the history of mankind as if he were a woman bustling about the house preparing Thanksgiving dinner. This juxtaposition creates a sense of irony.
