Without it, the Europeans wouldn’t have explored/colonized much more of Africa than the coast because they were so susceptible to malaria. On the other hand, the next most important technological advancements to spreading European influence in Africa are the Maxim gun and Repeating rifle. These gave more power to the Europeans because they could force the African people to do things by threatening them with getting shot. However, the guns would have done nothing if the Europeans were going to catch malaria and die.
