Confucius wanted to determine who could hold a civil service position by passing the civil service examination by merit as against using a connections or bloodline to attain the government position.

<h3>What was the Chinese civil service?</h3>

It was the administrative system of early Chinese government when the members of the service of which were selected by a competitive examination. Then, the system gave the Chinese empire stability for more than 2,000 years and as well, provided a major outlets for social mobility in Chinese society which eventually served as a model for the civil service systems that developed in other Asian and Western countries.

Even though the civil service system was categorized under government than religion, it was discussed to highlight the central role that the examination system played in the dissemination of the Confucian worldview throughout traditional Chinese society, that is, it was purely based upon the Confucian classics and upon recognized commentaries on those classics. .
