The Bedouins had livestock so they could eat, and animals such as camels and horses for traveling around. They also had wells for water and would occasionally go to the city to get whatever necessities they needed.

I believe because California wanted to enter the union as a free state, free state means banning slavery. This made the southerners upset because California goes from north to south and if California were to be admitted as a free state, it would violate the Missouri Compromise, which drew the border to determine free states and slave states.
