Why did northerners in congress accept California's application for statehood while southerners rejected it

I believe because California wanted to enter the union as a free state, free state means banning slavery. This made the southerners upset because California goes from north to south and if California were to be admitted as a free state, it would violate the Missouri Compromise, which drew the border to determine free states and slave states.
