Religious beliefs/practices reinforced existing social structures by offering new roles and status to some men and women. This happened during the period of agricultural production surplus.
EXPLANATION
During periods of agricultural production surplus, social and gender inequalities began to emerge. This was also strengthened by law and code. The belief system then influenced the role of gender in society. As an example; Confucianism, Hinduism, and Islam all encourage patriarchy. Islamic law teaches that a woman at every point of her life cannot be separated from men. Men must always be above women.
Christianity, applies patriarchy which is softer. Women and men have mutual obligations as a family. Confucianism also emphasizes piety in filial piety, respect for parents and ancestors is the main principle.
Whereas genuine Buddhism rejects the caste system which is the basis of social inequality. Buddhism teaches that both genders have equal access to equality. Yet, when Buddhism spread to eastern Asia, the principle softened influenced the value of Chinese culture dominated by Confucian patriarchy.
Some Christians and Buddhists have a tendency towards asceticism. Asceticism is an extreme rejection of worldly materialistic values, luxury, and even sexual pleasure. They avoid excessive worldly except the simple necessities of life; just basic needs to support worship.
