Hm.. this may be cliche, but whenever you press the button, it makes you forget more and more of your life, just how Mary forgot her birthday. Eventually, you start to get tired because of how hard your brain has to work for you to remember anything at all. After too much of this, you'll eventually never be able to wake up.

They also help to build up coherent relationships within the text.
