In this excerpt there is an opposition of two different points of view expressed in two words: <em>optimistic</em> and <em>doubtful</em>. Based on the antonym context clue, the reader can infer the meaning by contrasting these two words.

Thanks to this analysis, we may say that the word optimistic means hopeful, in opposition to <em>doubtful </em>or uncertain.
