As the Confederation had control of Mississippi River, once these strongholds were captured by the Union, the Confederation was unable to trade supplies with foreign nations and also isolated Texas and Arkansas from getting supplies from the east.

The capture of Port Hudson and Vicksburg meant a turning point of the Civil War as this reduced the confederate chances of victory
